The colour wheel
Standard colour wheels contain 12 colours that are divided into three classifications: primary paint colours, secondary paint colours, and tertiary paint colours.

Primary paint colours consist of basic red, blue, and yellow.

Secondary paint colours are comprised of two primary colours that are combined to create a third paint colour, such as mixing red and yellow to make orange.  You can also combine yellow and blue to make green or stir blue and red colours together to make various shades of purple.

Tertiary paint colours are created by  blending one primary paint colours with one secondary paint colour.  Examples include amber, which is a mixture of orange and yellow, and aquamarine, a combination of green and blue.

Colour and design
Now that we’ve covered the basics of colour, let’s touch on how paint colour ties in with interior design principles. For example, paint colour can accent the most basic furnishings to turn a room for an exquisitely sophisticated look.

As well, there is a psychology of colour that explains how people typically respond to various paint colours emotionally, physically, and behaviourally. Using this valuable information, you can choose paint colours that will help you achieve better results in your everyday life. Sleeping better and fostering better communication among your family members…who knew paint colour could do so much?
