If you haven’t painted in a while (or ever), this section will help you brush up on your painting techniques to make sure that your home painting project goes off without a hitch.

Have you already looked over our important painting preparation tips? Check! Great, now it's time for the fun part...the painting itself! We've put together these easy-to-follow suggestions for how to paint walls and how to paint floors.

How to paint walls: techniques for brushing or rolling paint on walls

  • Start off by using a paint brush to paint a strip a few inches wide along the room’s borders.
  • Quickly, before the paint dries, start in an upper corner and use a paint brush or roller to paint a large W or M to distribute the excess paint so it doesn't splotch on your wall.
  • Work in 4-by-4 feet sections, starting at the top and working your way down. Continue until you’ve finished painting all the walls in that room.

MORE TIPS:
  • For narrow areas, like those between window frames and the corner of a wall, using an angular tip paint brush allows more accurate placement of the paint.
  • For a consistent, straight line along the edge of trim or a window pane, give the brush a gentle wiggle as you apply the tips of the bristles to the surface. This move gently flares out the bristles. Then move the brush along the surface, remembering to hold it at its metal base (otherwise known as the ferrule) for greater control.

How to paint floors: painting exterior floors/porches

Discovering how to paint floors is tricky, but these simple techniques will make painting floors a breeze.

  1. Before you open that first can of floor paint, consult Preparing to Paint to determine how to properly prepare concrete and wood floors for painting in order to prevent the paint from peeling off the floor's surface.

  2. Use a paint brush or roller to paint a 2” wide trim along the border of the wall. Keep going around all walls of the room,

  3. To get the job done quickly, add an extension pole to your paint roller. Just be sure that you start in a corner opposite the exit so you don’t paint yourself into the corner!

  4. For best results, you’ll probably want to cover your floor with 2-3 coats of paint. Be sure to follow manufacturer-recommended drying times between coats to avoid an annoying tacky finish on your floors.

TIP: Have a bottle of anti-skid media (e.g., sand, walnut shells, cork) on hand to sprinkle onto the top coat of paint. This move will help prevent your loved ones from slipping on the surface when the floor/porch is wet.
