Ceiling paints

When your home decorating project includes painting the ceiling, you’ll want to take care in choosing the paint finish and colour. If you decide on a white matte finish, you can pick up pre-mixed ceiling paints. Ceiling paints are typically less expensive than wall paints because they don’t include the special features that make wall paints so easy to clean.

During home decorating projects, many homeowners find themselves tasked with the question of whether or not to paint the ceiling a colour other than white. The answer depends on many variables, including:

Texture: Ceilings that have a patterned or “popcorned” texture can be very difficult to cover thoroughly when painting.

Condition: Ceiling paints in anything but white will draw attention to your ceiling, which may not be ideal if your ceiling has any flaws or unattractive features (such as the situation above, where textured ceilings can cause an uneven paint job).

Personality:Your personality shines through in your design choices, and you don’t have to limit yourself to the four walls of a room. Many interior designers considered the ceiling to be a fifth wall that can be used to complement the look of a room.

Your personality shines through in your design choices, and you don’t have to limit yourself to the four walls of a room. Many interior designers considered the ceiling to be a fifth wall that can be used to complement the look of a room.

Ceiling paints are typically only available in white, so you’ll need to pick up a wall paint if you want to add colour to your ceiling.
You should also consider ceiling paint finishes. Matte finishes are common, economical ceiling paint choices. If your ceiling is smooth and flawless, you can opt for an eggshell or glossy finish. But beware: these finishes reflect imperfections, so you really want to be sure your ceiling is blemish-free before applying an eggshell or glossy ceiling paint.
If you’re not sure about the colour or finish that’s right for your ceiling, stop into Colours of Maple for some expert advice.

Wall paints

Some of the most important factors in choosing the right wall paints are their durability and cleanability. Keep the following points in mind when choosing a finish for your wall paints:

  • While many quality wall paints these days include qualities that make them easy to clean and maintain, generally the glossier finishes hold up better to scrubbing.

  • Will your walls be exposed to tiny handprints? When painting kids’ rooms, an eggshell finish is typically recommended for the walls and a semi-gloss is widely accepted for the doors and trim. These finishes better withstand repeated cleanings.

  • You probably want to steer clear of high-gloss wall paints for the entire room as the shiny surface can be cold and uninviting. If you’d like to use a high-gloss paint, limit it to smaller accent areas like doors or mouldings.

  • Walls that have bumps, cracks, and other imperfections are best covered in matte finishes. Because matte finishes don’t reflect light, they’ll do a good job of camouflaging minor blemishes.

Floor paints

When shopping for floor paints, you’ll want to choose a paint that is able to withstand regular scrubbings and heavy foot traffic.

  • Oil-based floor paints tend to adhere to the surface better than water-based paints. They also typically harden faster than their water-based counterparts, letting you get back to your regular activities quicker.

  • Certain surfaces might need a primer before you apply the first layer of paint. Check with the Colours of Maple staff if you’re not sure whether your surface needs special care. If a primer is needed, review the floor paint’s label for manufacturer-recommended primers that work well with your chosen paint’s finish and solution.

  • Painting a concrete floor? High-latex concrete paint works best for garage floors and other concrete surfaces.

  •  If there’s a chance that spills or other damp conditions will make the surface slippery, consider adding grit to your floor paint. It's tricky to calculate just the right amount, though – you want to prevent accidents without compromising the quality of the floor paint; check with the Colours of Maple professionals for recommendations on the right amount of grit to use for your painting project
    .
  • Two to three coats of water-based urethane paints – applied after the floor paint has completely dried – will offer top-notch protection against even the heaviest of foot traffic. Some urethane paints tend to yellow over time, however, so look for the brands that mention “non-yellowing” on the label. For best long-term results, apply a single coat of urethane paint every two years.
